The Dakar Rally, one of the most highly anticipated off-road rally events in the motorsport calendar, has officially commenced in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia. The spectacular opening ceremony yesterday signaled the beginning of the coming battle between the terrain and the relentless timer. Although it’s the fifth time the rally has been held in Saudi Arabia, the organizers say that “this year’s event will be the longest and toughest since the race moved to Saudi Arabia.”
Today’s prologue was filled with excitement and intense competition. Riders not only tested their readiness for the challenges to come. According to the event’s tradition, the results of the prologue determine the order for stage 1.
Among all the impressive participants, our eyes and minds were focused on Mason Klein who had turned a lot of rally heads over the past two Dakar Rally seasons. Klein achieved the 10th best time, just a mere minute behind the leader. This performance positioned him advantageously for tomorrow’s stage; the young Californian will be among those 22 of 418 who will have the privilege of choosing their starting position for stage 1.
The prologue itself is important not only to determine the starting order for what is typically the first major stage of the rally but also to help the riders feel the ground, gain critical insights into their vehicles’ performance, and start working on racing and fueling strategy.
Reflecting on his prologue ride, Klein expressed his satisfaction with his effort and the bike he is riding. He acknowledged the need to fine-tune his fuel strategy but was overall pleased with his abilities to navigate the course.
