Web app modernization for a non-profit healthcare organization

Our client, the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute, Inc. (HCI3), is a U.S.-based non-profit healthcare organization that aims to improve the efficiency of patient care in the U.S. healthcare system by implementing evidence-based incentive programs to reward medical specialists based on the quality of care they provide. To achieve this goal, the organization offers a comprehensive package of cost-efficient analytical and payment solutions, including Episode Builder, as part of the Prometheus Analytics program.

Episode Builder is a web-based app designed for healthcare providers to create, edit, review, and distribute episodes of care based on medical codes. An episode of care describes all services provided to a patient, from the onset of symptoms until complete recovery. Each episode of care has a set of medical codes—diagnosis (Dx), procedure (Px), and pharmacy (Rx)—relevant to specific cases, such as disease management, treatment planning, medication prescription, and more. The solution is equipped with robust functionality, including condition classification methodologies, unified medical code libraries, compliance features, and others.

As the speed, performance, and scalability of Episode Builder had declined over time, hampering the delivery of improved patient care, HCI3 decided to modernize the solution. Its primary objective was to completely rewrite the low-performance client side while preserving the back-end functionality and ensuring compatibility with existing APIs. Given our profound domain-specific expertise, deep understanding of medical coding systems, and practical experience creating medical coding software, such as TruCode Encoder, the client entrusted us with the project.

EffectiveSoft’s specialists executed a series of steps to complete the project and modernize the web solution according to the client’s objectives.

• To enhance the app’s performance, speed, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility and facilitate data exchange between the client side and the server side, we migrated the app’s front end to HTML5 and JavaScript and transitioned to the modern REST API Services, using Java.
• Our front-end developers employed the AngularJS framework to create a dynamic user interface, ensuring its seamless integration with existing APIs.
• To facilitate defining and managing episodes of care based on specific medical codes, our team incorporated a suite of dashboards, which enhanced Episode Builder’s usability and performance.
• We implemented drag-and-drop functionalities to facilitate data transfer within the app and enhance user experience (UX) for healthcare specialists.
• To improve the app’s scalability and enable it to efficiently manage increased user traffic and data volumes, EffectiveSoft’s specialists revamped the database architecture and incorporated load balancing.
• We preserved an existing medical coding management system to ensure the relevance and accuracy of medical codes and maintained tools for exporting episodes of care to support data analytics and healthcare claims processing.
• The QA engineer performed various types of functional and regression testing to ensure the entire system and its components could communicate seamlessly and function as intended.
